When Is an Immediate Denture Suggested?
To avoid the situation of going without teeth, an immediate denture may be suggested. This involves taking an impression of your mouth while your natural teeth are still present and then making a denture similar to your natural teeth, or making any necessary changes you may want. Once your teeth are extracted, the immediate denture is inserted right away. With an immediate denture, you avoid being without teeth while you go through the healing process.
Things You Should Know about Immediate Dentures
Since the denturist is unable to try-in the denture prior to your teeth being extracted, certain aesthetic compromises may be necessary. This shouldn't cause any major problems and the results are usually quite good.
It is important to follow the post-operative instructions of your denturist and oral surgeon very carefully.
As the healing process occurs, the oral tissue recedes, requiring adjustments to the denture. Follow-up appointments with your denturist are necessary. To maintain the best fit and comfort, a temporary liner or tissue conditioner may be placed in the denture. As the healing continues, the bone and gum tissue will probably continue to shrink to some extent; however, the rate of change decreases with time. This is natural and is to be expected. Once the healing process is complete, a new full denture or reline will be done to ensure the best fit possible. Your denturist will recommend the best option to suit your needs.
